INSPIRED TO DESIGN
10 TED Talks to
Watch & Get Inspired
A thoughtful selection of my favourite talks.
Are you having one of those "meh" days and need to get that little bit of inspiration to kickstart your day? Whatever the case is I got you covered with today's TED theme! You're welcome (:
I. «Embrace the Shake» by Phil Hansen
In art school, Phil Hansen developed an unruly tremor in his hand that kept him from creating the pointillist drawings he loved. Hansen was devastated, floating without a sense of purpose. Until a neurologist made a simple suggestion: embrace this limitation ... and transcend it.
II. «Your Elusive Creative Genius» by Elizabeth Gilbert
Elizabeth Gilbert muses on the impossible things we expect from artists and geniuses -- and shares the radical idea that, instead of the rare person "being" a genius, all of us "have" a genius. It's a funny, personal and surprisingly moving talk.
III. «Designing with slogans» by Stefan Sagmeister
Rockstar designer Stefan Sagmeister delivers a short, witty talk on life lessons, expressed through surprising modes of design (including ... inflatable monkeys?).
IV. «Four lessons in creativity» by Julie Burstein
Radio host Julie Burstein talks with creative people for a living -- and shares four lessons about how to create in the face of challenge, self-doubt and loss.
V. «The revolutionary power of diverse thought» by Elif Shafak
"From populist demagogues, we will learn the indispensability of democracy," says novelist Elif Shafak. "From isolationists, we will learn the need for global solidarity. And from tribalists, we will learn the beauty of cosmopolitanism" A native of Turkey, Shafak has experienced firsthand the devastation that a loss of diversity can bring -- and she knows the revolutionary power of plurality in response to authoritarianism.
VI. «The power of vulnerability» by Brene Brown
Brené Brown studies human connection -- our ability to empathise, belong, love. In a poignant, funny talk, she shares a deep insight from her research, one that sent her on a personal quest to know herself as well as to understand humanity.
VII. «The art of being yourself» by Caroline McHugh
VIII. «The first secret of design is… noticing» by Tony Fadell
As human beings, we get used to "the way things are" really fast. But for designers, the way things are is an opportunity ... Could things be better? How? In this breezy talk, the man behind the iPod and the Nest thermostat shares some of his tips for noticing — and driving — change.
IX. «Got a wicked problem? Tell me how you make toast» by Tom Wujec
Making toast doesn't sound very complicated — until someone asks you to draw the process, step by step. The process reveals unexpected truths about how we can solve our most complicated problems at work.
X. «Choice, happiness and spaghetti sauce» by Malcolm Gladwell
Tipping Point author Malcolm Gladwell gets inside the food industry's pursuit of the perfect spaghetti sauce - and makes a larger argument about the nature of choice and happiness.
